Beauty News - The end of microbeads? What are the alternatives?

Today the Daily Mail (2014) has reported on the use of microbeads in toiletries as being a pollutant in the food chain. Microbeads are tiny plastic, abrasive balls often found in toiletries such as face scrubs, designed to remove dead skin. The small beads manage to escape water filter systems and can find their way into the sea, where they attract chemicals and other pollutants. It is believed these chemicals could then end up the food we consume, if the polluted beads are eaten by sea creatures and fish.

There is call for manufacturers to reformulate their products without the use of mircobeads, additionally it is reported that Boots are phasing out the sale of these beauty products which should be completed by 2016.

What are the exfoliating alternatives to mircobeads?
Salt and sugar scrubs are more natural and environmentally friendly than plastic microbeads. I have also heard of homemade scrubs being created with oatmeal, but have not personally tried this one. If you have, please feel free to post a link to your recipe below.

Exfoliating gloves or body sponges are also an option. These are normally used by wetting the skin and glove/sponge before applying a face or body wash onto the glove/sponge. Then rubbed over the skin in a circular motion before rinsing.

As with all exfoliating products it is important that what you use is not too abrasive, as it could damage your skin.

Eye shadows under £3.00

Oriflame's Pure Colour Mono Eye Shadows are currently on special offer at £2.85 each for the duration of UK Catalogue 7 (with a usual recommended retail price of £5.75).

Oriflame Ecobeauty Smoothing Day Cream Review
The Ecobeauty day cream is dispensed through a pump at the top of the cylinder bottle and the first thing I noticed was its scent. Although Oriflame state that the range is free from synthetic fragrance the day cream has a distinct scent that I can still detect for an hour or two after applying. Its texture seems rich and creamy but once rubbed into the skin it feels light and the dry areas of my skin are much softer. I would say that it feels more like a primer on my skin than a day cream. I love that its paraben free! It’s great to see that Oriflame have moved towards developing products that contain fewer chemicals. However, I personally find the scent a little too much as I am used to day creams with little or no fragrance.

Oriflame Beauty Colour Pro Eye Shadow Trio

Oriflame launched their popular Eyeshdow Trio in June 2011. The compact flips open to reveal 3 complimentary shades which can be used to create the smoky eye look, and has a draw which slides out from underneath containing 2 Eyeshadow brushes; 1 large round brush for applying and blending the eye shadow and 1 smaller, pointed brush for precise definition and smudging.

Pictured above is my Eye Shadow Trio in Smoky Black Code: 22918 containing Black, Silver and White shades of eyeshadow. The product is also available in five other shades: Smoky Brown, Bronze Taupe, Sheer Purple, Shimmering Green and Royal Blue.

How to apply Oriflame Beauty Pro Colour Eye Shadow Trio:

Oriflame's Recommendation

Step 1 - Start by dividing the eye into three sections - with the rounded applicator, apply the lightest shade in the inner corner, the medium shade in the middle and the darkest shade in the outer corner.

Step 2 - With the pointed applicator, smudge and contour the shadow, finishing in a triangle around the whole corner of the eye, swooping it slightly upwards to create the cat eye look featuring on the catwalks around the world.

My Recommendation and finished look

I found it easier to blend the shadow with a hair eyeshadow brush, as opposed to the the round sponge brush included. However, I did find the smaller brush useful to add the white to the inside corners of my eyes precisely and intensely. Below I'm wearing the Smoky Black version for an evening out, but for a day time smoky eye look I'd recommend the Smoky Brown version to complement a fair complexion. I'm also wearing the Oriflame Beauty Reveal Kit below my eyebrow line as I prefer to wear a shimmer there instead of continuing an eyeshadow colour up higher.
